Former Director General of Police
Mr. Sunil Kumar Bansal is a senior advisor and mentor, with long experience in government and administration. Starting as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1987 batch, he held several senior positions in the Government of India, finally retiring as the Director General of Police, Odisha, in December 2023. In his two-year stint as the DGP Odisha, he led a 70,000-strong force of officers and men.
His areas of experiential expertise cover governance, conflict resolution, international relations, strategic security matters, diplomacy, immigration, HR management, and also the issues relating to transparency and integrity in large organisations.
He spent a substantial number of years with the Intelligence Bureau and held sensitive assignments. He served in Canada under the Ministry of External Affairs for four years. He also headed the Mumbai unit of the Government of India from 2017 to 2021 and covered economic intelligence, threat to national security from sea and neighbouring countries and security of our atomic and space installations.
Mr. Bansal has been awarded medals by the President of India for ‘Meritorious Service’ as well as ‘Distinguished Service’ to the country.
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. In addition, he holds degrees in Commerce as well as in Law (Gold Medal) from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. While in service, he acquired a Master of Arts in Philosophy in 2021. Currently he is the Independent External Monitor for the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore, WAPCOS (a Central Government PSU) and the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare under the Ministry of Health.
