Arun Chaudhary is a career intelligence and security professional who joined the Indian Police Service in 1977. He served as the police chief of five major districts in the Indian state of Bihar, handling international and state boundaries as a part of his remit.

After a stint in the state handling intelligence and VIP security, he moved on deputation to the Intelligence Bureau and in 1996 was posted as the Deputy Director of the IB’s subsidiary unit in Jammu. During his tenure he successfully handled several major events, including a major hostage crisis and the ongoing counter-terrorism challenges. In 1997 he was part of a team of security officials who helped carry out the first major state elections that led to the return of normalcy in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

In his tenure with the IB he also headed the Kashmir-Ops desk, and went back as an Additional Director heading the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in the state. In this capacity he continued to play a leading role in carrying out counter-terrorism operations, tracking channels of terror finance, events in Pakistan and Afghanistan, while also ensuring a peaceful political process in the state.

Before leaving the IB on promotion, he also headed the Bureau of Immigration  and helped expand its remit across land, air and sea ports. He connected immigration services to issuing visas by various Indian Embassies abroad. He also represented India on several multilateral forums on prevention of human trafficking and was the country’s point-person in the Bali Initiative launched by Australia and Indonesia.

As a Special Director General of Police, in the CISF, he headed airport security for the Government of India. On promotion to the rank of Director General of Police, he headed the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) under the federal Ministry of Home Affairs, a key border-guarding force for the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders. Under his charge the force witnessed a rapid expansion in force and tasking. After retiring from the Indian Police Service he also served as the Secretary of a special inquiry committee set up by the Upper House of India’s Parliament.
